I like your idea of splitting the ticket. Perhaps:
Ticket 1: SFO-HKG-BKK-HKG
Ticket 2: HKG-SFO
Can't recall whether we get stopovers on the intl awards tix. If so, that might work.
AA did away international stopover since May of 2009. Cannot see how you would have a stopover in this itinerary unless you have ticketed into 2 awards, i.e. a NA to Asia and an Intra-Asia award.
