According to posts on the slickdeals thread, the site was adding an extraneous comma when it auto-filled the promo code field for you. When I finally got a promo code after four or five attempts with a different browser, I did not have that problem, so the error may have been fixed. If you copy the promo code from your Email and enter it directly on a fare search on southwest.com, it should work fine.
