When you're traveling alone, do you list 1 or 2 people in the room?

A long time ago I remember a safety tip for solo women travelers to always list two people as being in the room so it's not known you're alone. I usually do that and haven't given much thought to the price being different. Today I just realized a hotel I'm staying at soon is $30 a night higher for "2" than for 1. It kind of made me wonder how often I likely pay more to add a second person when I'm by myself.

I'm kind of wondering now if this is even worth bothering with. I stay in decent places and deadbolt the door (and I've found many hotel rooms where the deadbolt was broken or missing and asked to be moved). I was walked in on about 2 a.m. in Paris about two years ago by a hotel employee (clearly no bolt on there), but he appeared as startled as I was. From what I've been reading most hotel attacks are from someone following at a distance to your room and pushing their way in so it's not like having "2" on the registry would matter anyway.

What do you all think? Is the "2" guest thing a tip that's worth following or not?
