Hey guys,

I don't usually fly UA but have a MEL-SYD-LAX-ORD coming up July this year. Its booked into K class. In the past when I've flown this route with UA (last time in March 09) I managed to get a paid upgrade at check in for about $1000, but I was wondering if its possible to get a paid upgrade before this point. I'm on a K class fare this time.

I've been reading that in the 'My Travel Options' section of my UA booking the upgrade to business option will sometimes appear. At present, when I go in there I just get the option for E+ ($150 which I'm happy to pay).

So, my question is, is there a set time or a trend time, at which a paid upgrade will become available or do I need to just wait for check in? Would it make any difference if I was going from E+ to J or not?
