I am part Burmese and I have been there (back in 1999), but I don't recommend traveling there. Not only is it somewhat disturbing to think that the taxes you spend will be inadvertently funding the military junta, but I would also be concerned about safety and personal freedoms. Back when I went, there were stories of the Burmese government seizing cameras, laptops, and other electronics.

There are some really beautiful sights in that country, and the food and culture is amazing, but I don't think it is safe. I do hope that the country undergoes a significant change, and I am able to go back some day. There have already some promising signs of progress in just the past few years.

It's also worth noting that the use of the name "Myanmar" is considered somewhat controversial by Burmese expats, many of whom do not recognize the name change as it was done by the military junta.
