To tell you the truth I did not see alot of gay people like I would in Rio but it is a different scene. I know that there are 2 saunas(one wth Garotos and the other not) and Hunters Video club. There is also a bar but did not venture to it. The beach is nice. So if you do not want the crowds of Rio, Floreepa is an alternative but i cannot speak of Carnival as I do not like crowds. But I did find it on the quiet side, the city that is, but I enjoyed it as it was safe walking around etc.
