If it's obviously too big to be a carryon, they will force you to check it at the front desk. If you get past there, you shouldn't have to pay to gate check it.
For the first time in over 15 years of flying in and out of JHM, i was asked to check my carry on since it weighed 21 pounds. As a *G connecting to CO any bag fee was waived so Island Air got no money from me. I argued that the bag would be put in the cargo hold anyway (left at the steps for pick up on arrival) so what's the big deal? The GA actually told me it was an FAA rule

Seeing I was getting nowhere, I complied and was forced to go thru TSA again in HNL instead of just going to my connecting gate. Island Air needs to do something about this, like just allow planeside drop off and pick up.
