In the case of the Metra, there usually aren't counters. It's similar to a subway platform without gates. In many of the suburban stations, it's even more like the side of the road, with no specific entrances, because the tracks are at ground level. Tickets are checked / sold on the train by the conductor. The Metra would make a really interesting test case.
