That having been said, if you're flying within China, odds are you'll be able snag a better ride if you go with CA, CZ, or MU.

Since 90% of HU's flights are intra-China, this is a pretty important consideration.

On the international front, they don't face much direct competition (smart move on their part), but as long as we're speaking with respect to this Skytrax rating system, all carriers are on the drawing board.

Better airlines (that I can think of) with respect to this point: BA, CO, EK, CX, JL, LX, NH, NZ, QF, OZ, SQ, VS.

But, none that matters much because HU's international presence is miniscule; judge them for what they are, and you won't be thinking "5 stars".
I used to get stuck on HU quite often in China for domestic flights. HU certainly beings up other thoughts than 5 stars for me as well. Actually, I think HU is the worst airline I have ever flown on-in competition with that airline in Laos (blocked out the name after therapy sessions)- got sent the frequent flyer card as my colleagues signed me up as a joke (they knew how much I disliked HU). Air China is a far better choice, as is China Eastern (MU).
