These trains aren't compulsory-reservation, though. Most train companies don't really care where you sit (as long as you're not poaching somebody else's seat) but I don't know what TPE are like (anyone?)
Well, the last time I used TPE the reservations weren't placed so were ignored. I don't know how common that is, though. The T&Cs of the Advance tickets require you to sit in the reserved seat, but my experience is that the only TOC that ever cared about this was GNER/National Express East Coast. I have no idea if newer operator East Coast actually care.
If it's a weekend, I think you can also upgrade to 1st class, on board, for £10.
Yep. Some TOCs don't allow this on Advance tickets but I can't see any evidence that this is the case for TPE. If you want to do this (and First Class on the TPE trains is quite nice, particularly the one individual seat which I guess is a bit of a prize...) ask the guard before you sit down there to be sure.
