Without being on a full fare (Y) ticket, there isn't much that you can do. With a Y ticket, you could use your AZ miles to upgrade, but SkyTeam elites are not added to the upgrade list. If the flight is going out with empty seats in first, you might get lucky by politely asking the gate agent, but that is unlikely.

If you call Delta, you should be able to move your companion into an exit row seat (or any other preferred seat).
