Unless something has changed recently I've done interline luggage from Airport Express on routes like HKG-LAX-ORD (CX/AA with AA flight number not CX codeshare). They should even give you two boarding passes in HK.

The only catch is that at LAX you need to collect your baggage and clear customs and put it on the transfer belt. However, you need to do this anyway no matter where you check in.
