Yes, you book online. Log into your account and put your mouse over the big button that says "Air" and click on the link below it that says "Book Award Travel"
At upper left left you will see what I have copied below, and click what is bolded and underlined:

A screen pops up with flights to choose and then you go on to pay for the $2.50 fee per segment (I think it is). Pay with a credit card and you can get refunded if you cancel.
Book your flights and your Companion's as one-ways for ease in canceling/changing.
As for the CP expiration, they are supposed to extend yours to year-end 2012, but that will presumably happen after March 1.
