Thanks for the input above - just to report back, it worked like a dream. Was booked on the 20:50 BFS-GLA and got the 18:10 instead. Absolutely no difficulty at BFS ticket desk, was simply a matter of then walking over the check-in desk to pick up new boarding pass.

Not bad for an £18.99 ticket
