For DEN-PVR UDU should work (http://www.united.com/page/article/1,,53519,00.html), so it is likely that (1) there was NF available and (2) IM tailored the price of the buy-up to get some buyers, rather than giving away the seats for free. Personally I think that $338 is marginally poor value for first on an A319 (but could be worth if you get the 50%EQM bonus with the buy-up at purchase). Certainly the miles+copay option is a *really* poor value for this route/equipment.
