Balkan Adventure - Advice please!
Has anybody been to or travelled around the Balkan states? We're flying BA LGW-PRN (Pristina, Kosovo). On arrival the plan is to hire a car and drive around some of the neighbouring countries. The views are meant to be sensational, and of course it's nice to tick off a few more countries.
Obviously there are still some restrictions on cross-border travel. For example we know we can't drive directly between Kosovo and Serbia. We will also be paying a slight premium at Europcar in order to get a vehicle with Macedonian rather than Kosovan registration plan.
Our current plan is as follows:
Friday:
Arrive PRN in early afternoon, drive south to Prizren and look around, followed by further drive south into Albania. Down to the coast then turn west and overnight in Podigorica (Montenegro).
Saturday:
Possible: short drive west into Bosnia & Herzegovina across the brand new border crossing near Trebinje. Drive east back through Albania and into Macedonia. Overnight at the beatiful Lake Ohrid.
Sunday:
Drive north to Skopje and look around the capital city of Macedonia. Further drive north into Serbia. No real cities to see, so have lunch and then back south into Macedonia, short westerly drive, and north into Kosovo. Overnight in Pristina, including seeing the famous statue of Bill Clinton.
Monday:
Morning at leisure. Mid-afternoon flight back to LGW.
What do people think? Does anybody have any hotel suggestions (by chance) for Podgoria, Ohrid or Pristina?
Any obvious places/sites we're missing?
Any experiences/advice/tips on such a journey? Many thanks!
