I book a flight online for my partner and I, and choose seats sitting together (usually next to a window). Then when the online check-in becomes available a day before the flight, I log in and I'm asked again to choose seats, only to find that there are only 2-5 seats available to book and they are all far apart from one another!
We had a similar problem recently on codeshare flights (QF ticket, AA metal) when there were 4 of us flying.
Apparently, when you 'select' a seat on a codeshare flight, it is sent as a request to the operating carrier (but not necessarily confirmed).
Confirmed requests are shown with a tick at checkmytrip.com (for Amadeus airlines).
