Barring any totally bizarre circumstance, I wouldn't consider a 6 hr bus ride to be an acceptable alternative. OP, did you ask about getting a flight on another airline? AA flies JAX-MIA pretty frequently.
It is an is what it is based logic. Delta was staring into the teeth of one of the biggest winter WX events in ATL since 1993.
In a situation like this, people who "expect" stuff typically end up dissapointed. You can beat that horse all you want or you can accept civilian commercial aviation for what it is... and in turn, use your resources and experience to make your situation as best as possilbe.
The second he landed in JAX, he should have been on the phone looking at his Delta options. If there were none, then next step is to ask them to put you on SW or whoever. If that does not work, wait to talk to a Red Coat or gate agent. Be nice and express a sense of urgency.
It is a helluva lot easier to get what you want on the front end. If you go out on your own and rent a car, you kind of played your hand. I extreme events like 9-11.... that would have been the right move... secure a ride immediately... in this case, he should have played it differently....
