My guess is UA won't do anything since UA really only would be losing out on the O/D traffic near DFW since if one were to connect at DFW, the same connection can be made at SFO or LAX.

Don't know that I agree with that. I think there is a large portion of the country that is not served by UA nonstop to SFO or LAX. Don't know the exact number put I'd guess like 50% of the population.
Places like PVD, BDL, ALB, SYR, ROC, BUF, DTW, PIT, MDT, ABE, RIC, ORF, TPA, STL, CVG, CMH, DAY, CLE, IND, SDF, BNA, MEM, OKC, and many others.
Many or most of these have service to DFW and IAH. QF now provides a one stop option to Australia whereas UA does not.
