Just a quick note to tell everyone how this matter was resolved. First, I did take the forum advice and canceled the autopay feature and will never use it again with Citi. Second, the account was finally reopened two weeks after my original complaint. It took many, many calls and eventually a person in their unit called CCU understood and accepted responsibility. Fees were refunded and small tokens were made, but not enough to restore our loyalty. We will look for better card companies and a better bank now that we know how Citi treats their best customers. My 2 cents. There are no better card companies to look for. They are all the same. In fact, Citi treated you well by re-opening your account and even provided "small tokens." Now you know you are one of Citi's best treated customers and you can count on that for their next mistake.
Since you already stopped the trigger, autopay, you are all set. Enjoy the rest of your trip in Europe.
