I always thought the NRT-IAD flight was a prestige route for NH, judging by the flight numbers NH1/2 given to the route. I'm sure it makes a fair amount of money thanks to Japanese bureaucrats shuttling across the ocean in J and F, and there are good connections to other East Coast destinations via IAD on UA's network.
