For the record I have found

SFO-LAX-MIA-MGA-MIA-LAX-SFO for £1058, thats the best I can find and for that you get:

60+180+40+40+180+60=560 TP

There are various routes through ORD and what not but I cant find anything cheaper for the same tier points.

Now bare in mind if you take a cheapo LHR -SFO (£400-£500) you get 60 TP

= 560+60= 620TP = silver woohoo! total cost about £1400... not bad for a good little holiday and silver membership to boot and about 21000 ba miles.

That is my plan (based on mid-November 2011 travel, which is when I intend to do it)
