What is the best way to deal with leg of the flight she won't be flying, i.e., what is the best thing to tell AC customer service, in the hopes of getting credit or refund with the least penalty? She also paid for 2 dogs to travel with her, which is like $100 more that won't be used, either.
I don't know about the dogs, but for her ticket, just call AC Reservations (or your travel agent, if you booked through one). Assuming it's a Tango Plus fare, she'll get a credit for the cost of the unused leg, and they'll charge a $75 fee (which can't be deducted from the credit) only when she later wants to use the credit.
