Over the years I have had Visa, MC, Discover, and Amex, which from actual experience, has absolutely the best customer service when it comes to identity theft, rental car collision coverage, internet purchase problems, etc. I have been through all of that. Like all operations which you deal with over time, they will make a mistake now and then, and I have never had to make more than one call to correct a mistake, even the $10,000 mistake.
+1. I've held both SPG and HH Amex for a few years, and both have stood by now on disputes and neither has stiffed me a bonus.

Contrast that to Chase, where I've only disputed one charge and was fought hard on it. I was only disputing about $200, so they basically buried me in bureaucracy and requests for paperwork so I'd give up. I'm not going to invest $1000 worth of my time to attempt to collect $200 - not even for the principle. But the consequence of that is for certain categories of purchases - ones where I think there might be a later risk of needing to dispute - the merchants who take Amex get my business.

I've never wrecked a rental car or had my identity stolen, but if one of those things happen I trust Amex to handle it better than the average CC company. Even simple stuff...Amex has Fedexed me a replacement card to a hotel before, whereas Chase snail-mailed one to my house...they do well.
