sounds like it at least involves pavilions, which is an issue that comes up a lot here. Fliar ended up being moved to 4BR oceanfront. and hence the new pool pavilions. (at amanyara too.)

also seems to reinforce "disappointment" to me, in terms of expectations. but im not sure any amans outside of indonesia are "hyped" here..
Apologies, was away for a bit. Yes, the pavilion was a disappointment and yes, I had high expectation plus I had just been thoroughly pampered for a couple of days by the 24/7 butler in Banyan Tree's double pool villa. It was the service and ambience for the first 3 days which disappointed more. I mentioned to the front office staff that I didn't know I had to climb 64 steps to pavilion with a bad knee and the response was "you should have let us know beforehand." No change was offered. I repeatedly asked the staff about paying for an upgrade to a villa and they went to a lot of trouble to discourage me. First they said I would lose the free dinner, then the free spa etc etc (all part of an Amex Travel offer). I was met with smiles everytime I complained but I was not getting anywhere. It was low season and there was a lot of renovating and repairs going. The first few days the banging was constant till pretty late. There was storm damage to a roof of one of the main buildings but one would think that they will try to accommodate guests in pavilions further away. Also the initial welcome was pretty ordinary from memory and I would not have known about the afternoon tea ritual (the staff serving were faultless so were the other F&B staff) had we not chanced upon it. So after a sleepless second night as I was quite miserable by then, I decided to check out 2 nights earlier forgoing the complimentary night. While having breakfast I noticed senior management out and about and asked the F & B staff who's who. I managed to accost an assistant manager (a lovely Brit) and she made satisfactory amends. I have stayed away from Amans since but will be in Hangzhou in April so am wondering if I should give Amanfayun a go.
