I too got a friend to sign in for me on an iPhone to activate Tripit Pro. I have had a free Tripit account for over a year, but I have an android phone. I first logged out of my online and android tripit account/apps. Then I had the friend download and install the AMEX Travel App onto her iPhone. She logged in for me using my AMEX Platinum online login. Then it asked to create a Tripit account or to login if you already had one. She logged in for me using my existing free Tripit login. Once that was done, I logged back in to Tripit on my computer and on my android phone and was glad to see that I was upgraded to Pro! I also received a confirmation email from Tripit telling me so. Great news!
