When I called to enquire about cancelling, they said they would do it right there and then. What was strange was that there was no mention about being put through to another team (i.e. a Retentions team). I decided to hold off, for the time being.

I had forgotten all about that. A quick look at the Terms and Conditions looks ominous:
"
The Bank may cancel any points which have been earned by a Participant but are unredeemed, if:
... (d) the Account is closed for any reason by the Participant or the Bank;"
I believe the Annual Black Card Fee is charged on 19 January, so I was planning to cancel the card by then. But that doesn't leave much time to spend the YourPoints!
Instead of cancelling, perhaps the thing to do is to downgrade the Black Card, as I believe none of their other cards have an annual fee.
