You can always ask if it's possible to upgrade by points at check in. They will respond that it's not possible, but as least they know that you want to be upgraded. Last time we asked at NRT, we were told that we couldn't upgrade our bonus tickets for points, but since one of us was EBS, we got the upgrades for free instead
I'm not sure that would have happened if we had not asked for a point upgrade.
I do this quite often, especially when I ask on other *A airlines than SK. Even though I'm EBG I've never been lucky with an upgrade obviously, but it's still worth a try. One time is enough ;-) I usually travel by myself, so I'm easily moved!
