Travel and through baggage on two separate tickets of Star Alliance carriers.

Dont know if this is the correct forum to post in, but im kinda desperate for an answer to my worries.
Im traveling to IAD from Stavanger in Norway this summer, and decided to split the booking simply to save about 500 bucks..
My first reservation is with Sas from SVG to LHR. The second reservation is with UAL from LHR to IAD. Question is, will they let my luggage be checked in all the way? And if the Sas flight suffers a techfail or something else delays me into LHR, what are then my options?
The Sas flight arrives in LHR 11:05 and my UAL flight departs at 13:05.
