Hi there. I'm new to FT; only stumbled upon here last week while doing travel research, but I'm glad I can offer my two cents.
I agree the Sheraton Suites in a good bet. I stay there a couple times a month when I don't want to drive back out to the burbs after a long day. It is clean, quiet, in a decent location close to restaurants. Ya Ya Mary's, the Greek restaurant the last poster referrenced, is very good.
I had one stay at the St. Regis and was not impressed. There are old hotels that are historic, and then others that are just old. This SR falls into the later.
The Sheraton Brookhollow is another good choice. Because I'm not on an expense account, I stay here or Sheraton Suites, whichever is cheaper. Sheraton Brookhollow is close to Galleria, but nothing much is around it. Stick around the Galleria area and have dinner then go back to Sheraton Brookhollow when traffic dies down.
The Aloft in the Galleria area I really do not like. It is loud and trendy...but if you are younger you may like it. I did find the walls then and the place had an odd bleach smell. I tried twice, and no more.
