I have the exact same situation as yours - a 10 hour layover - coming in from Male in the afternoon and going to Bangkok early morning next day.

I found out that there is a transit hotel called "Serenediva Colombo Transit Hotel" - he quoted me US$58 for the night. The managers email address is: [email protected] - if you need to get more info.
