I've got the same problem with my idle Amex MR points. Comparing the rewards for MR, a point seems to be worth not much more than 1 cent (US / Euro).

Considering people (including me) are willing to spend more than 2 cents per SPG-point (see Randy's Promotion), I am afraid Amex won't go for much better.

Of course the main problem is Amex just giving 1% reward, much less than expected in this market, especially as Amex charges merchants much more than VISA. Hopefully this will change.
