Only if you're changing to a fare that gets you up front on CO. In order to do the *A upgrade you'd need to be on an SQ coded Y or B fare, not CO coded so it is not possible to buy up to get there without a fee from CO.
And it only works on the planes with the old C or F cabins so mostly the 744.
