The car hire rules do indeed sound dodgy so I would be very wary.

As for the plane v the train or bus options. It really boils down to cost and how much time you have. If you are carrying a lot of luggage then the extra charges could make the plane work out quite expensive.
If you are not in a rush I would be tempted to take the bus option that BHDBOY has mentioned.
