No way. If that were the case, I'd book middle seats all day long. That's a lot of room!
Why should the standby passenger who hopped on the plane at the last minute be given more space than the passenger that dutifully booked his ticket two months in advance and has been holding that seat ever since.
Seems to me that, if anything, first come, first serve. (And don't try to sneak your arm on if I lift mine off for a second.)
