If you fly from LHR to Chicago, then your bags will not be inspected by the TSA as they only inspect bags prior to US departing flights. Your bags could be inspected by customs, but you are normally present then.

If you fly out of USA, then your bags could be inspected by the TSA, so maybe you need to cycle all the way south to Mexico before heading home....
