From Chicago to the west coast it is around 36 hours, if not more. Plus, it's probably also more expensive than flying. No wonder no one rides Amtrak
Several things you need to know about me:

I am almost 63 years old.
Train travel for me is not about saving money nor time. Try going across Russia on the "Rossouya" between Moscow and Vladivostok and you WILL understand about the time element
I do not fly to have a "nice meal".
I bicycle to see the ground close-at-hand.
Youth is wasted on the young and wisdom is wasted on the old
