They say that about L.A. as well, but in truth a lot depends on the wind direction. When it blows from the east, it is hot and dry (and sometimes very hot and very dry and very windy, when the Santa Anna ("devil winds") are up.)
I used to think L.A. weather was fairly predictable - I grew up there and generally speaking, it was mild in the winter, hot in the summer, and great the rest of the year.
The biggest shock of my post-L.A. life was last summer (July) when I flew LAX-LHR-EDI and it was warmer in Edinburgh (21c at 4 pm) than in Los Angeles (19c at 4 pm the day before).
