And before y'all start piling on, I'm not an MD, although FWIW I did 1.5 years of Med. school so am not a complete idiot per se.
You should forget about having 1.5 years of Med School, becasue AFAIK you have not learnt much there.

Varicella has severe risks (including pneumonia, meningitis and encephalitis) and should be properly diagnosed and treated. Also my reading and understanding of US CDC documents is rather different from yours and I could not find there any suggestion about not visiting medical practitioner. The way GPs operate in various countries is quite different and CDC says several times "call your medical practitioner". I do not know about USA, but in Australia, it is not usual for MDs to do home visits and they will generally ask you to come to see them. In cases like this, they will make necessary precautions to protect other patients. To see a doctor is apparently necessary to avoid above mentioned complications and possible other ones. For example, it is now recommended to use antiviral medicines in more severe cases, for people suffering asthma, certain skin conditions etc.

So, your advice to stay home because all the doctor can recommend is "wear baggy clothing and/or use OTC topical solutions" can be potentially fatal and I hope that your great advice does not kill anyone. There are around 1200 varicella hospitalisations and 4 deaths in Australia annually... That's rather large number given Australia's population.

BTW, I have bolded the word generally above as you have already misinterpreted me once. I do not mean "only" or "exclusivelly", I mean usually.
