As far as I could understand, the employees at the transfer desk told me I would have to go out through immigration and the arrivals hall then back upstairs to United's check in at the departure level since they could only print out boarding passes 3 hours ahead of time.
Last time I did this, about 1 year ago, from BKK-PEK on TG then PEK-ORD on UA, the transfer desk could not print UA boarding passes whatsoever. All passengers transferring to UA had to go through immigration and up to departure counter.
So if the transfer desk has the ability to print UA boarding passes, this is new in the last year.
