I'm surprised the AA and Emirates flights mentioned don't make a point of going exactly over the pole, if they can. It could be a good selling point for those flights...
I doubt the revenue they'd get from people who want to fly over the pole, but would otherwise fly with a different airline or not at all, would offset the cost of the additional fuel they'd need for a non-optimal flight path.
Granted, I may be wrong. Haven't been wrong yet this year, though.
