Seems to me it was like last summer when DL was hit really hard with MX issues, then things were better in the Fall. I am sure they have some aircraft in reserve but obviously not sitting at every airport in the country.
Unfortunately the OP was hit with one of those MX delays. It happens sometimes. IMO the $200 was fair compensation but perhaps the OP also wants his fifteen minutes of fame. Whatever.
