Car rental is the way to go, can't bring a surfboard on the bus. If you plan on surfing at any beach that you're unfamiliar with talk to the lifeguards ahead of time, they can point out the dangerous areas, things to watch out for, best place to paddle out, etc. Save yourself a lot of headaches later on. The advice holds true "if in doubt, don't go out"
