I'm definitely in favour of buying a netbook instead. True full-functionality in terms of codecs, awesome battery life, and you can browse Flash websites.
If you really have to, you could hook up a portable DVD player. Or, rip your DVD's using any number of free tools to easy DivX/XVid avi files.
