For London (and many subway systems), you need to know what the terminal stop is to know which train to enter. Not so difficult as maps are at each entrance of the platform.
I love both of these features of the London (and other) systems. I've got no problem consulting the map and figuring out which terminal stop I need and then double-checking the maps at the entrance to the platform. One of the massive problems I always had in NYC (years ago, hope they've fixed it) was that the maps were inside the gates and frequently so sprayed over that you couldn't read them (which was the exact intention of the hoodlums with the spray cans). I plan to download an app next time I use the NYC system.
