two days later than booked

and that was flying through MSY or something. They absolutely refused to put me on another carrier even though everyone else (AA,UA,Delta) was still flying to ORD, albeit a little delayed.
I called the EXP and asked for same day (honestly same-hour) saaver award availability and found the seat I needed! I asked agent to book who even suggest I call the carrier I was on and get them to endorse the ticket over at which point I said, 'I wish I wasn't on Southwest'. Agent booked the ticket and I flew home just an hour later than originally planned. Major props for AA's ability to do this.
I've had the opposite experience. I had an AA flight from EWR in the evening cancelled on me due to impending weather (flurries from what we could see) and I really needed to be back in BNA the next morning. They couldn't put me on the last flight from LGA that took off two hours later because it was full. Other carriers were also starting to cancel so I was running out of options. My parents had just dropped me off so I called them back and we made a beeline for PHL for a walkup fare on WN to get me back. Ironically, one of the people visiting our department was on that last LGA flight that did get out so I would've faced a lot of trouble had I not made it back.
But during this recent NYC weather meltdown, AA got us close enough to home where we could ditch the airlines and make it the rest of the way ourselves. We were glad someone picked up the phone whenever I called and agents helped us however they could. And if I can get original routing credit, I will be happy without complaint.
