As a "proper" Gold Elite I have never had an upgrade confirmed prior to travel and even after being "confirmed" for return travel it never happened so I gave up trying.
If you definitely want the upgrade I would use the points or pay for it.
GE partners travelling without GE will not get UG confirmed advance. but i think it has a higher chance than others.
GE does not always get UG confirmed advance. it depends on the availabilities. (certain booking codes) i have had UG not clear at the airport.
GE partners travelling alone on
air nz operated flights should get into designated lounge. could be air nz koru lounge, could be a star alliance lounge. always ask for an invitation at check-in so you know which one to go.
