I am after the stay at Iru Fushi sitting at Hulhule hotel right now, so can update with couple of things. According to HHonors, breakfast is not a complimentary option in Maldives & it costs 15$. However I have never been actually asked to pay for the breakfast.
As a Gold member you can choose from 2 options, either 30% discount on upgraded accommodation or one of the three available excursions (discover snorkeling, snorkeling safari, fishing). What is worth mentioning is that 30% off the upgraded accommodation gives the same upgrade rates as NOR1 prices. So if you want to upgrade, it's better to use NOR1 rates and choose the complimentary excursion option. As a Gold I received also a bottle of Mumm's champagne (worth $145 - hotel price).
I decided to stay in the beach villa upon checking out the Horizon over-water villa. The beach villas have much bigger and spacious bathroom and they are obviously on the beach, so it is up to personal preference.
I ate at Iru (main restaurant) and Islander's Grill. Normally I don't like buffet style dining but have to say that the quality of food at Iru was high. I can highly recommend Islander's Grill both for lunch and dinner. They do once a week champagne lobster night at $190 per person including one bottle of champagne per couple. The only minor issue is that it is very dark to sit on the beach, you can hardly see what you eat. Some lamps along the shoreline would also make this experience more romantic.
As for the service I am not impressed. In villa dining orders of light snacks take up to 1 hour. Same if you need some ice. Sometimes you can get a feeling like every bar or restaurant would work there completely independently. For instance, I wanted to order Moet champagne to the room, but I was told they don't have this brand in stock at this time. But somehow it was available at Iru restaurant later on. Same goes for all sort of juices / drinks served at the bars. For example, I ask for Guava juice and they tell that it is not available on the whole island but somehow the Reflection bar is serving Guava daiquiri...
As for the drinks & bars, I can understand that Maledivians are muslims and don't drink alcohol but in such case, Hilton should hire a professional bartender. Drinks at water's edge are horrible unless you will ask for double gin and tonic, which is hard to spoil. Drinks & service at Reflections are much better and surprisingly there is wider selection. As a Gold or Plat, you get daily complimentary happy hour at Water's Edge between 5 and 6 PM . However the service is so lazy that you might end up with one drink. No one even asked me once if I would like to have something more upon finishing my drink. They look but they don't want to see...
The Spa is expensive but you get what you pay for. Wide range of treatments and professional staff. Everyday there is a different promotion / discounts for certain treatments, so it is good to check.
As for tipping, it is good to know that to all prices on whatever you order there is an automatic 10% service surcharge. Therefore I didn't tip except for the housekeeping, which was mediocre at best to be honest.
The island itself is very beautiful and you can walk whole island around within 45mins. The good thing is that they have buggy to drive you to the restaurant and back, the bad thing is that when it is raining, expect to wait for it even 20 mins.
Overall I was happy but next time I would give a chance to Conrad or Beach House. As for the Hulhule airport hotel, I must say it does perfect job for what it is - airport hotel. It is a bit pricey, I paid €300 per night in festive season. But on the other hand there is no alternative close by. The accommodation is spacious, breakfast was excellent to my taste, free airport shuttle, free wifi in the lobby - what else do you need for the overnight stay?
PS. Regarding the internet at Iru Fushi which worked surprisingly good only on the sunny days, when it was raining the internet was no-existing, I think that everyone was trying to surf on such a rainy day which caused the problems.
