The Orchid At Mauna Lani-Stay Report

I spent 5 glorious days at this truly "luxury" property. In Starwood tradition, I couldn't have asked for anything nicer.

The valets greet guests with REAL Orchid leis, a touch I noticed when I visited for dinner on a previous island stay. I had hoped they hadn't lost that touch, and they didn't.

I'm SPG Platinum, and was on an award stay. I had no trouble confirming the room. Award rooms are booked under "Garden/Mountain" view. At check-in, I asked about a room upgrade. A DELIGHTFUL representative noted my platinum status, and asked for my patience while she went into the back. She returned with news of a suite upgrade. Not a view upgrade, a SUITE upgrade. I imagine I jumped at least 3 room categories. This hotel was FAR from slow and full of cash-spending guests. Yet, they recognized my status with Starwood and went way above anything I expected. By the way, the desk rep would have been just as delightful without the upgrade.

The hotel is what one would expect of a Lux Collection property. Tasteful decor with lots of Hawaii influence. Breathtaking sightlines and an open atmosphere that provides views that will make you gasp.

I was greeted by a guest relations rep after my check in. Not sure if every guest gets this, but it wouldn't surprise me. A very nice touch that adds a "VIP" feel.

The suite was spacious and comfortable, with an incredible marble bath off the bedroom. Tub and shower, plus a separate marble stall shower. There was also a half bath off the living room. Housekeeping was efficient, attentive, and FAST.

Restaurants: Even if you don't stay at this property, Brown's Beach House is not to be missed. A complete dining experience, with some of the greatest ambience (outside, next to the beach, by the water, need I say more?). Some say expensive....I say, LIVE A LITTLE. It's worth it, and no more pricey than anything else of its caliber on the island. I didn't try the steakhouse.

Breakfast choice is limited to one restaurant with choice of menu and buffet. Very good, but pricey. Goes with the property type, I guess. Still, VERY good.

The staff is invisible when you're not looking for them, and you can feel as though you own the place. The minute I needed something, however, response was fast, efficient, and everything I needed.

The hotel extended my checkout to 6PM. I almost felt guilty about it. How many more ways could they please?

The hotel was also very light on kids. Now before I'm crucified, I LOVE children. Sometimes though, I appreciate a quiet refuge. My last Big Island stay was at the Hilton, which was by contrast, a giant playground. This property offers some really neat activities for kids that I read about in the daily newsletter, and saw on the hotel TV channel. But the focus seems to be more on adults. It was a refreshing change.

Nothing about this stay was disappointing. And nothing about this stay met my expectations.....because they EXCEEDED them.

If you want to spend some time in Hawaii at a truly first-class resort, this is it.
