It sounds like you should have kept your luggage unlocked.

Years ago I flew from GUA to LHR via MIA and MAD. My case arrived safely but several of my group travelling together had their cases broken into. One guy discovered nothing was missing from his case but found some colourful Guatemalan worry dolls he didn't remember buying or putting there.
